Everyone in your group is now able to play an improvisational solo over the 10 Bar ensemble arrangement and have it recorded at the same time. Nominate a group member to tell me that everyone in your group has reached the second recording stage of the Improvisation activity. Once I have been informed that your group has, the following will happen. You do not need to remember the following list. I have only provided the following list so you know what to expect.
* Grab your allocated instrument and I will take one group member into an open room with pro-tools already set up on a computer. The order in which group members will enter in the room will be the same order that group members have been recording their video blogs in.
I will connect a midi interface to the computer and your instrument. This will let the sounds produced by your instrument be recorded onto pro-tools. I will also place a music stand in front of your instrument.
* Place the hard copy of the sheet music for your section of the 10 Bar Ensemble arrangement, on the music stand.
When you play your instrument your back will be facing the door. This will minimise visual distractions occurring outside of the room, as you play your instrument. To minimise audio distractions, you will be using headphones. The headphones will also help you hear your own playing clearly.
I will tell you to set the volume of your instrument to a low to moderate level and one that is comfortable for you.
I will open up a new track on pro-tools which will allow the sound your instrument produces to be recorded when the record button is clicked.
I will stick up the ' Do not enter' sign on the wall next to the door.
I will click the record button and will stick my thumb up to indicate that you are to start playing your improvisational solo.
You will start to play your instrument and as you do it will be recorded.
Once you play for ten straight bars and only the notes of the C Hungarian Gypsy scale, I will press the stop button. You may need to play your section continually, before you do play it with the correct pitches, rhythms, in time and before I press the stop button.
Once I have pressed the stop button I will let you know that I have. I will save your track under your name and the section you just played. I will let you know when I have done this. Then, I will play back the recording so you can listen to it. Once you have listened to it, I will ask you to exit the room, make your way back to your computer and start preparing notes for your video blog.
Preparing for your video blog.
You will need to brainstorm your ideas about the following question,
1. Did you find having your improvisational solo based on the C Hungarian Gypsy scale easy or difficult? If you found it easy why do you think it was easy for you? If you found it hard why do you think it was easy for you?
Click on the following link. It will open a page with an online brainstorming application that you will use for brainstorming your ideas.
After your last video blog for the improvisational activity is recorded and uploaded, I will give you a copy of your improvisational solo, show you how to upload it onto your blog. When it is uploaded onto your blog, I will load it on the classes community blog. Once, everyone's improvisational solo is uploaded on the classes community blog you will be able to listen to everyone's elses improvisation solo's.
